As the largest consumer of sugar globally, India witnesses an impressive production of 26,821,000 tonnes of sugar by its mills between October 1, 2019, and May 31, 2020, according to data procured from the Indian Sugar Mills Association. In India, sugar is a staple item, with an annual domestic demand of 25 million tonnes. Sugar and jaggery are the most affordable sources of energy, providing 10% of daily caloric intake. Every year, the industry produces 350-365 million tons of cane, 25-27 million tons of white sugar, 6-8 million tons of jaggery and khandsari, 2.7 billion liters of alcohol and 5500 MW of power, along with several chemicals. The sector is even able to export 3200 MW of power to the grid.

However, the industry still faces challenges such as static sugarcane productivity (70 tons/ha) and low sugar recovery (10%) nationwide. But it has the capability to meet demand for potable alcohol and to blend 5% of gasoline. The industry is evolving into sugar complexes that produce sugar, bioelectricity, bioethanol, biomanure and chemicals. New opportunities, such as fuel ethanol, raw sugar, and shifts in the global market, are opening doors for the industry. The Indian sugar industry, poised for excellence, has not only sustained its role as a provider to the largest domestic markets but has taken a step further in becoming a consequential producer of carbon credits and green power. This industry has the promise to support the national goal of ethanol blending program of E10 and above, further solidifying its place as a key player in the journey towards sustainable development.
