Business Wire IndiaFrost & Sullivan's flagship event, the Growth, Innovation and Leadership Summit (GIL) 2016: Nepal recently concluded its very first edition at the Soaltee Crowne Plaza Kathmandu. It was the perfect conclave of industry experts, government representatives and visionaries who came together to envisage future prospects and growth of Nepal. They revisited existing business strategic goals and discussed how Nepal can bring the next wave of innovation emerging from various convergence scenarios.
The GIL journey began with the lighting of the lamp and an inaugural speech by Mr. Prabhakar SJB Rana, Chairman Emeritus of Soaltee Hotel Limited, followed by Mr. Aroop Zutshi, Global President and Managing Partner, Frost & Sullivan who talked about the importance of visionary innovation and strategies and how imperative it is for all players today to survive in the global economy.
YB Dato' Sri Idris Jala, CEO of PEMANDU, (Performance Management and Delivery Unit), Prime Minister’s Department, Malaysia, took a session on the Economic transformation journey of Malaysia that highlighted how most governments have strategies and plans but fail to operationalize them into detailed a program for implementation. He said, “Nepal has a great potential as a country, but what is needed is leadership to move everybody in the same direction. It is important to bring the private sector, the government and the civil society together and work toward a detailed plan of action.”
Interactive panel discussions with senior thought leaders on the “Future of Business” like Mr. Upendra Poudel, CEO, NMB Bank Ltd and Mr. Saurya Rana, President, Nepal India Chamber of Commerce and Industries discussed the importance of making Nepal’s business environment more conductive. This would convince investors to undertake large scale investments in hydropower, tourism and infrastructure, which shall accelerate and expand its balance of trade. Mr. Upendra Poudel brought forth the criticality of change in Nepal’s banking structure; how this needs to be done without disrupting the industry itself and also how bureaucratic support is needed for the future of Nepal’s banking industry.
Mr. Binod Chaudhary, President Emeritus, CNI and Chairman of Chaudhary Group was felicitated with this year’s GIL Leadership Award. Mr. Chaudhary humbly accepted the award and spoke about investments, the significant growth of Nepal and social welfare. He emphasized the implementation of plans, which will be the key in achieving double digit growth.
Mr. Manoj Menon, Senior Partner and Asia Pacific Managing Director, Frost & Sullivan delivered the keynote speech on Business Model Innovation where he stated that “Business model innovation offers an incredible opportunity for us to address some of the biggest challenges faced in Nepal today. Combined with leveraging new digital technologies, we will see the emergence of new companies that will unlock the full potential of what Nepal has to offer the world.”
Other sessions highlighted Nepal’s visionary perspective 2035 where eminent bureaucrats like Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat, Sr. Political leader of Nepali Congress stressed upon how Nepal can capitalize on its unique biodiversity and ecology. Panelists like Mr. Padma Jyoti, Chairman of Jyoti Group of Companies, Mr. Swarnim Wagle, member of the National Planning Commission (NPC) in the Government of Nepal spoke on how the country can take advantage of its neighbors to obtain high economic growth with the merger of capital and new technology.
Toward the end, the summit had GIL Bytes presentations led by Mr. Anurag Banerjee, Director of SocialCops, Mr. Sambhav Swar Sirohiya, CEO Kantipur Digital Corp, Movers & Shakers Holdings, Mr. Gaurav Agrawal, Director - MS Group, Managing Director - Nepal Hospitality and Hotel (P) Ltd., Everest Hospitality and Hotel (P) Ltd., and Founding President – Nepalese Young Entrepreneurs' Forum and Mr. Nitin Kalothia, Director Manufacturing & Process Consulting Practice, Frost & Sullivan. The evening concluded with Frost & Sullivan’s 2016 Best Practices Awards where companies were acknowledged for their stellar achievements and leading edge innovation in their respective domains.
