Rumala?Sahib (often spelled Rumala Saheb) is the finely embroidered square or rectangular cloth that Sikhs use to drape over the Guru?Granth?Sahib?Ji, both when the scripture is at rest on the throne (takht) and whenever it is ceremonially opened or closed. The Punjabi word rum?l simply means a protective hand?kerchief or cover, but in gurdwara practice it has come to signify a richly decorated silk or cotton set—usually two matching pieces plus smaller “palki” cloths—reserved solely for shielding the living Guru from dust, light and casual touch.
