This banking entity was one of the three Presidency banks chartered by the British East India Company, including the Bank of Bombay and the Bank of Madras. For a considerable length of time, these Presidency banks performed functions akin to central banks, and their legacy was carried forward by their successors. Ultimately, the three banks amalgamated in 1921 to form the Imperial Bank of India, which after India's independence, was rebranded as the State Bank of India.

The banking sector plays a paramount role in the Indian financial landscape, serving as the preeminent purveyor of credit and magnet for the lion's share of savings from the population. With a preponderance of public sector banks, the banking industry has consistently served as a catalyst for the growth and advancement of the nation, aligning with socialist ideologies and the principles of a welfare state. Banks in India offer a diverse portfolio of financial offerings, including savings and transactional accounts, fixed deposit products, loan services, insurance products, and investment options. In furtherance of these ideals, public sector banks have served as steadfast champions of agriculture and other priority sectors, acting as vital conduits through which the government implements its programs for equitable economic growth and development.

The Indian banking sector can be categorized into two classifications: public-sector and private-sector. The public sector banks are state-owned and directed by the imperatives of promoting social welfare and ensuring a fair allocation of resources. On the other hand, private sector banks are run by private companies and aim to maximize their profits. However disparate their underlying motives may be, public and private sector banks exert a significant influence within the Indian financial milieu, offering a broad array of financial and banking services to a diverse clientele comprising individuals, corporations, and other organizations. By fulfilling these entities' financial needs and requirements, they play a crucial role in fostering economic stability and growth.

The financial landscape in India has undergone significant transformations in recent times, primarily owing to the inundation of technological advancements. The financial services industry has experienced a radical shift, making banking more readily available to the masses. The proliferation of technological advancements, such as online and mobile banking, along with other digitized financial services, has contributed to this accessibility. Furthermore, the government's drive towards a cashless society has also played a pivotal role in increasing the utilization of digital financial services. This has made banking services more convenient and has given rise to new players like Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay.

However, the Indian banking sector remains beset with many challenges, chief among which is the persistent problem of Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) or bad loans. This challenge has put immense strain on the banking industry, denting its profitability and growth prospects. Furthermore, the low levels of financial literacy and inadequate digital infrastructure in certain regions have hindered the spread of banking services in these areas, restricting the reach of these crucial financial tools to a significant segment of the population.

Considering these challenges, the government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have instituted a range of measures to address them. For instance, the RBI has established stringent norms for identifying and resolving NPAs, along with increasing the capital adequacy ratios for banks to fortify their financial stability. Furthermore, the government has initiated several programs, such as the Jan Dhan Yojana, to promote financial inclusion and integrate previously unbanked individuals into the formal banking framework.

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana has empowered those without savings accounts to establish a bank account without having to adhere to a minimum balance requirement. The RBI and the Indian government have been instigating the banking sector to broaden its reach, even into the rural regions of the vast nation. By the year 2020, the bank account penetration in India had attained a considerable 75 percent. In the 2023 Union Budget, the implementation of Digital Banking Units (DBUs) was proposed nationwide. These brick-and-mortar establishments aim to furnish a plethora of digital banking amenities and propagate financial literacy. The RBI is also poised to embark on its highly anticipated Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) Project. Due to the proliferation of digitalization endeavors, it is anticipated that online banking penetration in the country will reach 50 percent by 2025.
